Deborah Osteen, founder and owner of Modern Day Treasure Hunters, grew up in Clayton,
California.  As a Varsity athlete in cross country, track and soccer at Clayton Valley High School in
Concord, California, Osteen excelled in distance running, which led her to accept an athletic
scholarship to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she competed as a Varsity Cross Country
and Track athlete from 1997 to 2000.  Osteen received her B.A. in Business Administration with a
minor in History in 2001.

Following college, Osteen accepted a Head Cross Country and Assistant Track Coach Position at
the University of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg) where she coached from 2002 to 2006.
Osteen coached distance athletes to set seven new school records and achieved the highest
women’s Cross Country Conference placing in school history (5
th/12 teams).  Osteen received her
Masters of Business Administration
(MBA) at the University of Southern Mississippi in Spring 2004.
Additionally, Osteen authored “Mental Training for the Distance Athlete: The Running Values
Auction” in Strategies, A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, published in January 2006.

Osteen’s special love and talent for sports and adventure combined with the growing childhood
obesity epidemic in the United States led Osteen to start Modern Day Treasure Hunters in April
2007 in her hometown of Clayton, California, as a way to encourage children, families and adults
to get outside and active.

Today, Modern Day Treasure Hunters hosts events throughout the Bay Area, California including
community/family, teambuilding, birthday parties, adult trivia nights, and corporate events.

Dear Modern Day Treasure Hunters,

Welcome to our website and to the new outdoor adventures that await you, your family and
friends!  Modern Day Treasure Hunters started in April 2007 as a way to connect children (and
adults) to the many benefits of the outdoors and nature using the modern technology of a GPS.

Modern Day Treasure Hunters strives to create a balance between the advanced technology of
today and our simple yet complex nature that has surrounded us since the creation of Earth.  Both
technology and nature provide us with ways to learn and improve ourselves.  Technology can
strengthen children’s cognitive and social abilities while nature introduces children to the greater
spectrum of life, a world that is bigger than themselves.  Nature challenges children to use all their
senses (see, feel, taste, hear, or smell) to experience an environment with innumerable
discoveries.  A challenge that the computer or video game has yet to present.

Each year brings another shocking health statistic for our nations children.  For example,
according to www.drivekidstobefit.org, only 32% of kids ages 6 – 17 meet minimum standards for
cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.  We as a community must
create physically active events for our children to encourage healthy outdoor play.  Modern Day
Treasure Hunters is a form of the “age-old” fitness activity of…walking.  As one of the easiest
forms of exercise, walking provides numerous health benefits to all who partake including; more
energy to enjoy life, weight management with toned muscles and less body fat, stress reduction,
deeper and more restful sleep, healthier bones and joints, and reduced risks for heart disease,
diabetes, colon cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.

I invite you to come and join us at one of our many events this year in
2008 (Calendar) and
explore the wonderful East Bay Area that we live in.  Exercise does not have to be a chore, it can
be fun!  And nature provides us with an abundance of adventures and learning opportunities, all it
takes is a step out the front (or back) door!
